Welcome to all our new families to Chevallum State School and welcome back to our current families. New Chevallum families will quickly become familiar with our school routines, make new connections with other families and feel like an integral part of our school community.

COMMUNICATION

These early weeks are important in terms of communication. Please make sure all your contact information eg email, addresses, phone numbers are up to date at the office, as well as important medical information.

SMS (0427 068 773) and absentee line (5453 2380) for same day absences

SMS urgent messages are sent to the parent body “re school closures in emergencies”

All newsletters are emailed. P&C communication is via email and school newsletter

PARENT TEACHER EVENINGS

Another aspect of communication is the Parent Teacher evenings. Class parent teacher nights are being held soon and we urge parents to attend.

Dates and times below: -

Family I, J, K (Prep/Year 1) - Tuesday 7th February – 6pm-7pm

(meet in your child’s classroom)

Family A, B, G, H (Year 2-4) – Wednesday 8th February – 6pm-7pm

(meet in your child’s classroom)

* Parents of Instrumental Music Students are invited to attend a short information session with Wendy Russell (Chevallum music teacher) at 5.45pm in your child’s classroom, just prior to the class meeting.

Family C, D and E (Year 4-6) - Thursday 9th February 6pm-7pm

(meet in your child’s classroom)

*Parents of Instrumental Music Students are invited to attend a short information session with Wendy Russell (Chevallum music teacher) at 5.45pm in your child’s classroom, just prior to the class meeting.

Please make alternative arrangements for the care of your children on this evening. The evening is designed so parents can gain a greater understanding of classroom procedures/expectations and knowledge of how they can best support their child in their learning. From previous experiences, the responsibility of supervising children and ensuring their safety detracts from an informative, relaxing evening for all.

For your convenience WOOSH (afterschool care facility run by our P&C) will be open during parent interview times (6-7pm). Please see the P&C News section below for more information. Bookings required by this Friday, 3 February.

ATTENDANCE AND SAME DAY ABSENCES

Please ensure that your child is on time for school as being late can cause unnecessary stress in children and missing valuable learning time impacts greatly over time. The bell rings at 8.35am for an 8.40am start to the school day.

Children arriving from 8am will be supervised in the undercover area until 8.25am. There is no supervision until 8am so arrangements for booking into WOOSH (out of hours care program) will be necessary.

If your child is unable to attend school on any given day, please phone or SMS so this information can be recorded in our attendance records as soon as possible.

MORNING SUPERVISION PROTOCOLS IN THE UNDERCOVER AREA

To make this supervision a calm and orderly experience for all here are a few rule reminders:

• All students need to be seated in their Family group area

• Students not be on the stage

• No play equipment (eg balls) or electronic devices (must be booked into office)

• School bags need to remain with students not dropped off at classrooms prior

• Children dismissed at 8.25am under the direction of the adult on duty

PICK-UP AND GO

See below for clarification of our rules and regulations around our Pick-up and Go procedure in the afternoons at Chevallum. Thank you for your patience and understanding as our main focus is the safety of all students.

A few reminders:

• Traffic coming from Buderim direction uses the front bus zone and may not turn left into the school from 2.00-3.15pm

• Traffic from Palmwoods uses the internal roundabout and exits the same way

• All children must be picked up by 3.20pm (ie 1/2 hour after the end of school day)

• If using the carpark across the road in Twists’ Turf Farm please be mindful this is private land and we can only park there because of our neighbours’ goodwill. There are dams and sometimes trucks using the dirt road so please escort your children directly to your car and do not allow them to play in this area. The Twists also ask not to block their letterbox or access to their road whilst parking.

All parents are required to complete an enrolment form for afterschool care (WOOSH) for their child. In the unforeseen, once off event that you are running late or unable to pick up your child up before 3.20pm we are able to send your child to this service. At WOOSH they will receive afternoon tea and be able to play and be cared for until your arrival

CURRENT CHEVALLUM ROADWORKS

Thank you for your patience during the Sunshine Coast Council’s road project in front of our school. Although these works are causing some inconvenience, the finished project will make the crest of the hill a safer area for traffic passing, entering and leaving our school. The excepted date of completion is 14 February, 2023.

On a related matter, the school and P&C have raised concerns with our Local Council representative, Winston Johnson, about the removal of the seven carparks in front of our school to accommodate the project. Mr Johnson has assured the school community that he will follow up with SCC to see if some of these car parks can be regained.

I look forward to sharing another year of learning with our students, staff and families.

Regards,

Linda Short (Principal)
