END OF YEAR LIBRARY NEWS
2023 has been another very busy year in the library. There has been fantastic borrowing right across all year levels and as always it is rewarding to see our young Preps grow as readers during the year. Thank you to our Library Leaders who helped at break times with borrowing and returning. We wish our Year 6 students all the best with their studies at High School and hope they will continue to read quality literature throughout their school life and beyond.
EVENTS & ACTIVITIES
Book Week was a big success with the theme “READ, GROW, INSPIRE”. Put simply books and reading help us grow in so many ways as we develop a better understanding of ourselves, others and the world around us. Books fill us with inspiration. The benefits of reading are well known and many. It exercises the mind, stretches our imagination, builds our vocabulary and improves our spelling, writing and logical thinking skills. Helps us learn about our past and possibilities for the future.
Book Week gives us the chance to dig deep into quality Australian literature. This year, our very own resident author, Kerri Day’s book “Beside the Sea” was a Children’s Book council Notable winner for book of the year, Early childhood. A remarkable achievement. We are so lucky to have Kerri in our library. Her second book Run Pups Run has also been released and we wish her every success with that publication as well.
We certainly had some amazing costumes appearing at our annual book character parade. From Prep to Year 6 including our teachers, the costumes were original, colourful and fun. A big thank you to the teachers who as always get involved in a big way. To all the parents who helped with costumes and support their children to love books, a huge thanks.
Our Break Times in the Library were busy again this year, with students enjoying our traditional board and card games on some days as well as jigsaws, colouring in, and of course just meeting and spending time with their friends sharing a good book or reading quietly. We also enjoyed welcoming Story Dogs each week, it was lovely to have beautiful dogs and their caring owners visiting each week to help our young readers gain confidence. Story Dogs is a volunteer organisation which does great work in schools throughout Australia.
READERS CUP
Our Regional Readers Cup team for 2023 – Noah, Benaiah, Charlotte, Arlo and Mia put in a great performance to win the regional competition and become the Sunshine Coast Regional Champions. They then went on to place 2nd in the State Championships in Brisbane. So, an absolutely fantastic result for the team.
This is the 6th time Chevallum has won the Regional Competition. We have also won the State Title once and have been runners up at State three times. This is a notable achievement for a relatively small school and reflects our strong reading culture and the ability of our students to show committed team work.
INTERHOUSE READERS CUP
Gurrooman took out the Inter House Readers Cup this year. The team of Sonny, Summer and Temani worked well as a team to win the day in a close contest. Who will win in 2024?
THANK YOU
As always, a BIG thank you to all the families who share books, encourage reading at home and make books and stories part of their family tradition.
Don’t forget to visit our wonderful council libraries over the Christmas break, they have many wonderful activities on offer. Visit the Sunshine Coast Regional Council website for more information on what is happening in your local Library.
The Library wishes all our families a safe and happy Christmas holiday and we hope you catch up on all that reading you have been saving up during your busy year. See you in 2024!
Regards, Scott and Kerri
