HAPPY ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY CHEVALLUM STATE SCHOOL!!!
On our school tour, we had past Chevallum pupils from as far back as 1941 and up the 1970’s and 1980’s. Everyone enjoyed their trip down memory lane and many happy conversations could be heard as morning tea was served. They all had amazing stories to share and all thoroughly enjoyed the historical displays in the hall, the tour of the grounds and classroom visits, which provided an opportunity to see how the school has grown and changed.
Seeing staff and students dressed in costume reflecting the Centenary & 1920’s theme, added to the occasion as did the historical display and Centenary inspired artwork decorating the Hall. Thank you to Miss Susan and Miss Kerri for their work on the displays.
Ken and Ann Dickson attended as Ken went to Chevallum in the 1940’s. Ken was pleased to find himself mentioned the Punishment Register for “playing about in the creek in canoes and endangering the lives of young children”. It was good to see the canoe bandit had grown up to be a lovely man.

Marena, a past student who started at Chevallum as a pre-school student in 1990 shared her recollections from her treasured school days. The Chevallum Community Choir performed the new school song, written by teacher Jo Keates and Kirsten Bowman, our P&C President, cut the ceremonial cake. Each family group received their own Centenary cake to share at morning tea.
Following the parade, dignitaries and special guests were invited to the opening of our P&C commissioned Centenary Art installation followed by a morning tea. Our Year 6 leaders, assisted with the opening and Mr Rob Skelton officially opened the art Installation – Our Reflection Circle. This beautiful seating area decorated by hand made mosaics, telling the story of Chevallum was made by artists Kaye Spierings and Linley Boyle. It will double as an outdoor teaching space and is a beautiful addition to our school grounds. The opening of the Art Installation was wonderous. A huge gasp of awe came from the audience upon the big reveal!
23 October – Past Student, Parent and Staff Function
Saturday’s luncheon was a relaxed affair. The afternoon was entertaining with Scot Teichmann’s MC skills and humour making the afternoon roll along very well. Speeches and recollections were shared across the afternoon. One attendee, Jean Sawry was our oldest guest at 97 years of age, she is a past Chevallum student, and a younger sister of a founding student from 1921!
