Chevallum has adopted a Teaching and Learning Framework based on  The New Art and Science of Teaching (NASOT), developed by respected educational researcher Dr Robert J. Marzano. All teaching staff have undertaken comprehensive professional development in this area.  The ASOT sessions have provided not only an opportunity to develop new skills and knowledge but also a forum to discuss, share and reflect on professional practice and classroom strategies.

In "The New Art and Science of Teaching: A Comprehensive Framework for Effective Instruction", author Dr. Robert J. Marzano presents a model for ensuring quality teaching that balances the knowledge of educational research with the equally vital need to understand the individual learning differences of students which are present in each classroom.  ASOT is designed to help teachers examine and develop their knowledge and skills, so they can achieve the best outcome in terms of teaching practice and student achievement.

The teaching and learning progression: mental states and processes in learners' minds are the mediating variable between the effective application of instructional strategies and enhanced student learning. (Marzano, 2017)
