Italian At Chevallum – Prep – Year 6
Chevallum takes pride in being one of the first primary schools in Queensland to begin Italian classes as part of the LOTE Curriculum (Languages Other Than English) in the 1980's.
Today Italian classes begin in Prep and continue throughout the school up to and including Year 6. Each Family Group has Italian classes each week, with one of our two experienced LOTE teachers. We also celebrate Italian Day annually.
Learning languages is a wonderful opportunity for children to broaden their view of the world, Australia's place in the world, and the many communities living here. It means not only learning to understand another language but also to explore and appreciate the wealth of knowledge that is part of each culture surrounding that language.
"The LOTE syllabuses approach the learning of languages in a holistic way, with students engaged in comprehending (listening, reading and sociocultural understanding) and composing (speaking, writing and sociocultural understanding) about the world." (Qld Curriculum & Assessment Authority QCAA website – May 2020).
The Benefits of Learning a Second Language
- Learning a language broadens views and enriches the world view of students.
- Enhanced appreciation of how languages work along with opportunities to build on problem solving and lateral thinking skills.
- Learning a new language takes commitment, this builds willingness to take on new tasks and opportunities and apply new ideas and information in a productive way.
