Bird Week

30/10/2018

During Bird Week a group of dedicated Chevallum Bird Watching students participated in the Australian Backyard bird count. It is the largest citizen science project in Australia and gives valuable information on the types and numbers of birds across Australia. This is the fifth year in a row our school has taken up the challenge.

Using an App designed specifically for Bird Week, Lauren, Fynn, Jessica and Luka had only 20 minutes to identify and number the birds in our school. Amazingly we found 18 different types of birds. The most special bird we found was an Australian Darter or Snake bird identified by Fynn. It was sunning itself by the dam with its wings fully extended.

Having lots of different types of birds in your area means that you have a healthy natural environment where animals can easily find food and shelter. It was an amazing experience and we would recommend you to start looking in your own backyard for as many different species you can find, you may be very surprised.

Visit the Bird Life Australia website for more information on our wonderful Australian birds.

Happy bird-watching from the 2018 Chevallum bird watching crew.
